From the president

Coolum Boardriders next scheduled round will be on Sunday the 17th of November. Meet at the clubhouse at 6.30am for a 7am start.

Our team for last weekends Be the influence Boardriders battle surfed the living daylights out of sloppy and small surf at Dbah all weekend to post an other great finish at a teams event. Our team of Jaleesa Vincent, Isabella Nichols, Kirra Green, Eli Criaco, Dane Hamilton, Simon Knox and Dave Reardon-Smith approached the weekend with a great attitude and were always going to do well. While in the top four teams all weekend, the last event of the comp held in 1foot complete slop relegated us to fifth, while a little disappointing to our marauding team still a great result for the club. A special thanks to the support team of the Greens, Nichols, Vincents and of course Amy.

Kelly Norris surfed in the HIC Pro at Sunset Beach in Hawaii, tearing his way to a win in his round two heat to be then knocked in his third round heat in a pretty sus call. Watch the heat yourself and make your mind up, Its on the HIC comp site. Heats on demand rounnd of 96 heat 11.

Congratulation to Ellia Smith winning the Julian Wilson board raffle from last weekend.

On the subject of raffles we are currently selling tickets in the Boardriders Battle Raffle. First Prize a $55,000 Toyota Rav, second $1500 worth of Billabong gear and third place a $1000 worth of Canon Camera gear. Tickets are $5 each with $4.40 going back to the club.

Be The Influence Boardriders battle

Coolums TeamLast weekend the 2nd and 3rd of November the Queensland round of the Be The Influence Boardriders battle  ran on the Saturday and Sunday at Duranbah. With the top teams in Queensland competing for spots in the national final at Cronulla in January. With a special dispensation for all the pros to surf for their clubs incredible surfing went down all weekend. With world champs Parko, Mick Fanning and Steph Gilmore as well as pros such as Bede Durbridge, Mitch Crews, Brent Dorrington and a swag of others a formidable field of clubs were in contention.
With Coolums team of Kirra Green, Jaleesa Vincent, Isabella Nichols, Eli Criaco, Simon Knox, Dane Hamilton and Dave Reardon-Smith competing in three different disciplines over the weekend, a pairs event, teams event and a skins event, the team had their work cut out for them. Coolums pairs team of Isabella Nichols and Dane Hamilton nailed all in their path till meeting Snapper Rocks team of Jay Phillips and Steph Gilmore in the Semi Finals, a great effort. Dave Reardon Smith was our skins representative and also or power surfer in the teams event.

Isabella NicholsIn the last round of the day Coolums team after winning their semi needed a second place finish in the teams final to get to Sydney, but the foot high and very ordinary onshore conditions just didn`t allow out team to strut their stuff. With the clubs fourth place finish we missed out on the trip to Sydney but were still rapped with our performance, Being the highest placed Sunshine Coast Club and having relegated some of the top clubs on the Goldy to minor placings, along with our great results in all the other teams events this year the Kirra Teams Event, The Straddie Assault and the Jim Beam Tag Team event, Coolum justified their third place seeding at the event.
President Daryl Maudsley said “ With a highly talented and really enthusiastic team Coolum surfed incredibly well to again end at the top of the field in a teams event. The team attitude and a great group of supporters it was only really the world Champs and pros making the difference over the weekend. Everyone represented Coolum and the Club proudly “. Coolum Boardriders would like to thank everyone that went down on the weekend for their great attitude and watch out next year.

FROM THE PRESIDENT – COOLUM BOARDRIDERS

Coolum Boardriders next scheduled round will be on Sunday the 10th of November. If we can organise permits we may run a makeup round for this months missed comp on Sunday the 27th of November. Stay tuned.

The second round of the Queensland Junior titles ran at Duranbah last weekend with Coolum Surfers all going well. Isabella Nichols again dominated the under 18 girls to take out the state title. Isabella is also in the state team for nationals and has also picked up a wildcard into the Quicksilver Roxy Pro trials next year. Jaleesa Vincent dominated the day in the under 16 girls convincingly winning the round, and placing second in the State Placings. Jaleesa will also represent Queensland at the Nationals. Kara Peterson and Amber Dodds finished second and third in the round with Amber finishing second in the state and Kara third. Zane Assink loved the crowds at Dbah and finished fifth in the round and Second in the under 12`s in the state. Ellia Smith surfed her heart out to finish with a second place in the under twelve girls, then with a nail biting finish she missed out a state title by 0.3 of a point. We think she should have been given an extra point just for that smile. A great effort from all our surfers who went down.

The Straddy Assault runs this weekend with our team all ready to give it a great shot. The Teams event runs on the Saturday with the pairs event on the Sunday. The contest is always a great weekend and with the best surfers from Noosa to Ballina competing the surfing is always red hot. We wish all the guys and girls the best.

The Be the influence Boardriders Battle will run on the 2nd and 3rd of November amd promises to be bigger than Ben Hur. With a over a hundred thousand dollars in prize money the event has rounds in each state finishing with the finals in Sydney. The contest has suveral different formats so it should be interesting. With all the major pros competing for their clubs, Parko, Fanning, Bede, Mitch Crews, Occy and a host of others the standard of surfing will be great. We will be having training on Tuesday the 29th to get the team used to the format.

Next Comittee meeting will be on Tuesday the 22nd at 7pm. All members and interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Finaly a huge shout out to Tim and the crew at Dominoes Pizza in Coolum. Tim and the Store have come on board as our major sponsor for the club for 2014. We cannot
thank  Domioes enough as their sponsorship enables the club to compete at all teams comps both junior and senior helping to nuture some of the great surfers we have around Coolum.

A Generous Winner

Surfing Queensland presents the winner of the Boardriders Club online survey with a custom JR Surfboard

Surfing Queensland is committed to the development of the sport of surfing. In its role as the peak state body it is entrusted with supporting the needs of the 38 affiliated clubs in Queensland. By supporting the needs of these clubs and their members Surfing Queensland can work to develop the sport of surfing in Queensland to its maximum potential.

Earlier this year Surfing Queensland implemented a survey designed to better service their affiliated clubs. To encourage members to participate in the survey Surfing Queensland offered up some great incentives. Participants were presented with an opportunity to win a custom JR Surfboard or a signed and framed Kelly Slater photo.

The winner of the competition was a family from Coolum Beach. They are members of Coolum Boardriders Club and were incredibly appreciative when their club Treasurer, Chris Barraclough contacted them to advise them of their big win. When Chris received the advice from Surfing Queensland that someone from Coolum had won, he commented, “That’s great, this couldn’t have happened to a nicer family!”

The competition winner was declared. 10-year-old Ezra Coyle was to be the lucky recipient of this amazing surfboard. Ezra however had other ideas. He decided he wanted to give the prize surfboard to a friend who had broken his board.

Jamie and Janie Coyle Ezra’s parents had a series of discussions with their son and were convinced this was what he really wanted to do.  Ezra explained to them that he already has a great board and thought he wanted to help out someone else. Jamie Coyle, Ezra’s Dad said, “ I know it sounds crazy and we have taken our time with this one as Ezra is only 10-years-old and it is crazy generous, but this is what he has decided to do, so we want to support him in this”

The whole street was out in force to see the new board arrive. The custom JR board was presented to Ezra and his mate Beven this week in Coolum. It was an auspicious occasion. Beven was extremely grateful and thanked his mate for the generous gift. Ezra was excited and on request he brought out his own board for the photo.  Just for the record Surfing Queensland’s representative took some time to check out Ezra’s surfboard and commented,   “Ezra is quiet an artist he has painted some sick tanks and bombs on his stick…It’s very cool, definitely a keeper!”

Surfing Queensland would like to congratulate the winners and thank all club members for their participation in the survey.
